Join us in celebrating two milestone Sway-iversaries on our team this month, congratulations Dennis + Alyssa! 💫🌞🌊

It's hard to believe it's been 4 years since Dennis joined Team Sway! With over a decade managing CPG supply chains, Dennis is no stranger to juggling many moving parts. Today, he oversees logistics of raw material sourcing, scaled production, and Sway’s manufacturing partner ecosystem. With Dennis at the helm, it’s always smooth sailing (literally and figuratively ⛵), we’re so lucky to have him!

Way back in 2020, Alyssa reached out eager to help bring Sway into the world, and joined our young team before we even had a product! A gifted science communicator with an eye for design, deep passion for sustainability, and heart of gold, Alyssa leads all things marketing at Sway, from managing customers to partnerships to internal comms. This multitalented gal's got it all and is responsible for building the Sway community we know and love today — we wouldn’t be here without her!

What a treat seeing our work featured in @smithsonianmagazine!

Wondrous kelp beds harbor a complex ecosystem that’s teeming with life, cleaning the water and the atmosphere, and bringing new hope for the future. In California, seaweed is being researched, reforested, regeneratively farmed, celebrated at festivals, and transformed into biofertilizers, biofuels, and bioplastics.

If we were to start a Sway Book Club (which, should we?) our first theme would be oceans (of course) and these reads would top the list:

🌊 The Curious World of Seaweed (@josieiselin) — a treasure of a book written by local Bay Area legend. For the botanists out there, this is the perfect foray into phycology.
🌊 Let My People Go Surfing (Yvon Chouinard) — the story of @patagonia’s founder, who brought doing good and having grand adventures into the heart of his business life. We strive to embody his philosophies into the culture of Sway.
🌊 Ocean Anatomy (@juliarothman) — cute illustrations flow along shorelines, across the open ocean, and below the waves to explore the hows and whys of the underwater world (how the world’s oceans formed? Why is the sea is salty?). Excellent for all ages!
🌊 Slime: How Algae Created Us, Plague Us, and Might Just Save Us (Ruth Kissinger) — spans the vital and varied role of algae, from its role in creating the Earth’s atmosphere to its use in modern food, fuel, and medicine.
🌊 Fylling’s Illustrated Guide to Pacific Coast Tidepools (@marnifylling) — a pocket-sized, scientific, and utterly charming field guide to the Pacific coast intertidal zone. Must-have for tidepoolers!

Paint palette landscapes made possible by microalgae 🌈💧

This is Senegal’s Sine-Saloum Delta, formed by the confluence of the Sine and Saloum Rivers. Recognized as a @unesco World Heritage Site, the delta has been used for salt farming by generations of Senegalese women. Water evaporates from these pools during the dry season, leaving behind salt to be harvested for culinary use and food preservation.

But what about those bright colors? These pools are home to salt-loving microalgae that produce pigments to absorb sunlight, resulting in this stunning kaleidoscope of hues. The varying salinity levels and sun exposure create different conditions in each pool, which is why some glow pink, others shimmer orange, and some turn deep purple ✨

Yet another example of algae doin’ its thing.

Our team works in tandem with composters, coalitions, and communities to help facilitate the mass adoption of composting, with the goal of making it an accessible and mainstream practice!

We envision a future where consumption can actually feed into a cycle of biological circularity – a system nature invented eons ago 🌀

What once seemed impossible is now a @time Best Invention of 2025 💫

Sway was born from a lifelong love of the ocean — and the learning that seaweed’s natural polymers, evolved over millennia to withstand harsh ocean conditions, can mimic plastic’s most valuable qualities.

In January 2025, we launched TPSea Flex™ via blown film extrusion for the first time, proving our compostable, seaweed-based formulations could be manufactured on the world’s most scaled flexible plastic equipment. Just months later, we validated commercial-scale production. Last week, we were named a #TimeBestInvention.

Our journey is a challenging one. What you see here: off-colors, crispy edges, weak seals, funky trials. What you don’t see: hundreds of formulations, failed production runs, and invisible tradeoffs.

Yet our mission remains clear: to scale materials that can replenish the planet. If Sway can help seaweed, and really all biomaterials, reach the hearts and minds of the mainstream, then we’re more likely to see the whole movement succeed. We’ll see a circular system evolve that’s not just about ensuring a “livable” planet, but one that’s worth running toward.

Holy molten ocean 🤯🌈🌞

JP and Charlotte of @projectworldsail are circumnavigating the globe by sail, a task achieved by fewer people than those who have summited Everest. In a rare moment of downtime, they captured this surreal clip of the sea glassing over into a psychedelic surface.

From @projectworldsail: “The Atlantic Ocean has never looked so beautiful 🧡🧡🧡 As sailors we rely on wind to get around but when there isn’t any you cannot help but be in awe of the sheer beauty. We hopped up on the boom for sunset and watched the sea turn from water into what looked like a burning oil or lava. Absolutely no edits or filters on this clip.”
