John-John-Florence-Sway-Packaging-Collaboration

World Surf Champion John John Florence uses seaweed packaging.

Florence, the outdoor gear brand founded by World Surf Champion John John Florence, is packaging their Olympic boardshorts in Sway’s home compostable seaweed polybags!

This package is made with kelp sourced from responsible ocean farms that help clean our seas, balance our climate, and enhance biodiversity. Its green pigment comes from a natural, fully biobased dye.

Even better? This package won’t pollute — it’s home and industrially compostable after use, creating healthy soil in the process.

"This is one of the coolest things we've ever done.

Florence aims to help scale innovation, like Sway, for a future with cleaner seas. Everyone I've shown, from friends to people in the industry, have been so stoked on it."

Our Partnership

As a judge in the TOM FORD Plastic Innovation Prize powered by Lonely Whale, John John Florence helped identify the most promising biologically degradable alternatives to traditional thin-film plastic through a rigorous, two year-long competition. Ultimately, his input helped champion Sway's 1st place win!

Now, through the Accelerator's Early Adopter coalition of brands, Florence is advancing Sway's Prize-winning packaging, beginning with a limited boardshort release.

How should I dispose of this package?
This Sway Polybag is backyard and curbside compostable. Certified Home & Industrial Compostable by TÜV Austria, this material meets the gold standard of compostability, breaking down in a healthy compost within 6 months (and in many cases, within 2-3 months).
Why are compostable materials important?
We could speak infinitely to this point, but we’ll keep it simple.

1) Plastic is being produced at an alarming rate. Plastics production has reached a whopping 400 million metric tonnes globally each year.

2) More plastic = more petroleum. If trends in oil consumption and plastics production continue as expected, plastics will account for 20% of total oil consumption by 2050.

3) Plastic recycling isn’t working. Less than 10% of all global plastics produced have been recycled, with most accumulating in landfills or flowing into nature. Under 1% of plastic bags are recycled, with the vast majority of thin film plastics rejected by curbside recycling programs. When thin-film plastic does end up in recycling centers, it’s difficult to sort and clog machines.

4) Compostable packaging solves these issues, while enabling biological circularity. In-line with the circular economy principles as defined by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, compostable materials can prevent waste, circulate materials, and regenerate nature. That means less petroleum, toxins, and pollution, while creating value at every step!
How do I start composting?
Our favorite question! Home composting is an awesome way to create value from your compostable household scraps, and it's accessible for any space. From backyard composting to freezing scraps and sending to a local service, we cover your options here. The planet thanks you!
What does "biobased" mean?
This polybag is made with Sway Firstwave™, a Certified 100% Biobased material. Biobased materials are made with renewable resources, meaning their ingredients can be grown again and again, unlike the non-renewable resource petroleum.

In this case, Florence has chosen a material that is made entirely from seaweed and plants!
