Sway is a team of material scientists, designers, ocean lovers, and compost enthusiasts creating and scaling seaweed packaging — starting with bags for shipping and shopping. Get to know us!
Founded in 2020 and operating from the California Bay Area, our company is truly thrilled that Sway packaging is out in the wild. It's been quite the journey to get here!
We believe in a future where everyday materials can replenish the planet, from sea to soil — and so do our partners.

WHY SEAWEED?
Seaweed helps replenish the planet.
This marine crop is abundant in natural polymers, the building blocks of Sway materials. When compared to common renewable packaging inputs like corn, potato, or sugarcane, the benefits of seaweed go above and beyond.
Seaweed thrives off sunlight and sea water, requiring little to no inputs — unlike terrestrial crops, farmed through systems of industrial agriculture. It’s fast-growing, space-efficient, and grown around the world.
Plus, seaweed creates regenerative impact (giving back more than it takes): increasing habitat for marine life, boosting biodiversity, and mitigating climate change impacts like ocean acidification and erosion. New science is proving that seaweed farming even sequesters carbon!

HOW TO DISPOSE
Compost this bag!
Sway packaging is designed for home and industrial composting.
CERTIFICATION
The material is certified through TÜV Austria, the global gold standard that confirms it breaks down safely without toxic residues or microplastics.
Sway packaging is constantly improving, which means that new iterations must be formally re-certified for compostability. Your bag may be labeled “certification pending” if the material is currently undergoing that process. All ingredients are certified compostable.
HOW TO DISPOSE
Toss this bag in your backyard pile, countertop composter, or green bin. With heat, moisture, and microbes, it will fully decompose into healthy soil within 6 months.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS
• If your bag has an adhesive strip, cut off before composting.
• If sending to industrial facilities, check your local guidelines first.
• For faster decomposition, cut your bag into smaller pieces!
DON'T COMPOST?
Consider starting, or find a nearby facility! Farm programs, community gardens, or private services may also be available locally.
Note: This bag is not recyclable. When compost isn’t available, please dispose in trash. In landfill, it will break down like a piece of fruit.
